On the second day of Yalın Şeyler Çanakkale, we gathered at Kalebodur’s production facilities in Çan. Kalebodur has supported art in public space since its founding, and here we had the opportunity to discuss the relationship between art and architecture in the public realm.

The panel, which I moderated, brought together artist Ahmet Doğu İpek; Nurtaç Buluç and Mustafa Ergül, founders of the Şehrin Panoları initiative; Simge Abay, Head of the Kale Design Centre; and architect Ömer Selçuk Baz.

We discussed the definitions and boundaries of public space, the presence of art in everyday life, and its relationship with urban memory. The work of Şehrin Panoları prompted us to consider the place that artworks we often walk past without noticing hold in a city’s memory.

Ahmet Doğu İpek and Ömer Selçuk Baz’s experience of working together gave us a way to discuss what becomes possible when an artist and an architect think through the same project. We explored how different disciplines can make room for one another, and what collaboration can bring to the design process.

After the panel, we visited the factory’s art and design spaces and its production line. Later in the programme, we met the women of Nevruz village. These encounters allowed us to consider the questions we had discussed in relation to materials, labour and local production.
