about

Banu Uçak

I was born in Istanbul in 1979. After FMV Özel Işık High School, I graduated from the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of Yıldız Technical University, and then from the master's programme in Architectural Design at Istanbul Technical University. After my first steps in architecture at the Assos archaeological excavation and at TALU Ltd., I joined Yapı-Endüstri Merkezi (YEM) in 2001. Over fourteen years at YEM, the leading information centre of the building sector, I took on different roles. I closed my career there as Strategic Marketing and Business Development Coordinator. I then worked for two years as Deputy General Manager at Seranit Group, and for two more years as General Coordinator at Ferko İnşaat. I ended that professional career with a dream: to take part in a freer way of making things. Today I teach part-time at the Faculty of Architecture of Özyeğin University, and I work as an editor.

I also give consultancy in marketing, business development and sales for design, architecture and building materials at Ağustos, our family company in lighting technology and digital transformation. I develop long-term strategic projects for companies that make products for designers and architects, and I work to align these projects with their corporate goals. I produce content on architecture, and I speak and moderate regularly in different settings. I support İstanbul Serbest Mimarlar Derneği, an association of independent architects in Istanbul, in content development and communication. Alongside what is new in architecture in Türkiye and around the world, I keep thinking about my own interests: cities, transformation and urban memory. At every step of my career, I have tried to develop projects that raise the quality of architectural culture and of the built environment. I am a nominator for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, and since 2015 I have been a jury member of the World Architecture Festival. In 2017 I helped to prepare and presented İzdüşüm, a two-part architecture documentary for TRT Belgesel. Each episode follows how an international movement found its reflection in Türkiye: one episode covers Art Nouveau, the other Modern Architecture. Both episodes are in Turkish.

At heart, I am a lover of design and architecture. My journey goes on: to experience and share every beauty that human hands, minds and sensibilities create, and to enjoy the taste of life.
